Myrmoteras
Die Gattung Myrmoteras gehört zur Unterfamilie Formicinae. Sie ist im südostasiatischen Raum mit 34 Arten verbreitet. Auffallendes Merkmal sind sehr lange Mandibeln, die auf rund 270° gespreizt werden können. Sie sind dann fast parallel nach hinten an den Kopf gelegt. Die Gattung ist die einzige innerhalb der Formicinae mit einem Schnappfallenkiefer-Mechanismus. Werden lange Haare vorn am Clypeus gereizt, schnappen die Kiefer mit sehr hoher Geschwindigkeit zusammen, so dass flüchtige Kleininsekten etc. gegriffen werden können. Insgesamt ist die Lebensweise der Arten dieser Gattung noch wenig erforscht. Einige Arten sind nur nach Arbeiterinnen beschrieben; Königinnen sind von 19 Arten bekannt, Männchen von nur 5 Arten.

Bilder
Am Hinterkopf haben Arbeiterin und Königin einen auffälligen Wulst. Es wird vermutet, dass dieser im Zusammenhang mit der speziellen Kiefermuskulatur steht. Allerdings findet sich dieser Wulst auch bei den Männchen, die nur sehr kurze Mandibeln mit sicher eingeschränkter Funktion besitzen.
