Die Ameisenfarm ist gleich nach dem [[Erdnest]] die artgerechteste Nestform für die meisten Ameisen. Der eigentliche Nestbereich besteht aus einem formstabilen Substrat, in dem die Ameisen ihre Kammern und Gänge nach eigenem Ermessen selbst anlegen können. Ist der Plattenabstand richtig gewählt, bietet sich im Gegensatz zum [[Erdnest]] ein guter Einblick in die Nestbauten. Durch verschiedene Faktoren wie Kondenswasser, zugeschmierten Scheiben oder versteckt gegrabene Kammern und Gänge wird eine Ameisenfarm selten die gleichen Einblicke wie zB ein [[Gipsnest|Gips-]] oder [[Ytong-Nest]] ermöglichen.  
 
Der Begriff Ameisenfarm bezeichnet klassischerweise nur den Bereich des Formicariums, in dem die Ameisen ihren Bau anlegen können. Zwingend erforderlich ist eine so genannte [[Formicarium#Arena|Arena]], wenn sich die Kolonie über die Gründungsphase hinaus entwickelt hat. Ist der obere Bereich für Futter- oder Wassergaben nicht leicht zugänglich oder die Oberfläche des Substrates nicht zum Furagieren geeignet, ist eine angeschlossene Arena immer erforderlich. Bei [[claustral]] gründenden Arten kann eine Ameisenfarm auch bis zum Schlupf der ersten [[Pygmäen]] ohne Arena betrieben werden.

== Beschreibung ==
==== Aufbau ====
Die Ameisenfarm besteht im Prinzip aus zwei durchsichtigen, parallelen Platten mit wenigen cm Abstand und einer Füllung aus zum Graben geeignetem Substrat dazwischen. Die Platten können wahlweise aus [[Glas]] oder auch Kunststoff wie z.B. [[Acryl]] bestehen. Als Substrat bietet sich vor allem eine Mischung aus [[Sand_Lehm|Sand und Lehm]] an. Neben einer guten [[Schimmel]]resistenz durch fehlende organische Stoffe speichert dieses Gemisch gut Feuchtigkeit und bildet eine sehr stabile Grundlage zu graben für die Ameisen. Glas ist zu bevorzugen, da Kunststoff-Scheiben sich unter dem Einfluss von Feuchtigkeit meist etwas verformen (wölben), was am Rand zu Undichtigkeiten führen kann, oder auch zu einem Nachsacken der Füllung.
 
Der Eingang zu einer Ameisenfarm sollte naturgerecht im oberen Bereich der Ameisenfarm liegen. Durch die Befeuchtung und andere Faktoren kann ein waagerecht angebrachter Eingang wesentlich schneller einstürzen, ein senkrechter Eingang an der Unterseite der Ameisenfarm kann von ausfließendem Wasser ausgespült werden. Die Ameisen werden aber jeden Ausgang, oder besser Eingang, annehmen.

Diese Schicht dient zum Speichern von Wasser, auch wird überflüssiges Wasser aufgefangen und so ein Versumpfen des Substrates vermieden. Bei richtigem Aufbau wird die Belüftung des Substrates verbessert und so ein ''Gammeln'' des Nestes vermieden.

Die zweite Schicht besteht aus zB der Sand- Lehmmischung und bildet das eigentliche Nest, hier können die Ameisen ihr Nest anlegen. Besondere Anforderungen an die Nestschicht sind ein gutes Speichern und Verteilen der Feuchtigkeit, sowie absolute Formstabilität der gegrabenen Gänge und Kammern.

Um der Ameisenfarm einerseits ein gutes Aussehen zu verleihen, andererseits die Feuchtigkeit besser zu halten, kann als oberste Schicht eine dünne Lage aus Ziersubstrat aufgebracht werden. Wichtig ist jedoch mindestens ein Zugang zur Nestschicht. Dieses kann durch kleine "Krater" oder Vertiefungen erreicht werden, oder die Nestschicht durchbricht wellenförmig die Zierschicht. Die Wahl der Zierschicht sollte keinesfalls zu grob oder fein ausfallen, auch müssen die allgemeinen Voraussetzungen für einen [[Bodengrund]] erfüllt werden. Einige cm müsen oberhalb des Substrats frei bleiben, damit die Ameisen dort das beim Graben der Gänge anfallende Bodenmaterial ablagern können.

==== Sonderformen ====
Neben der klassischen, stehenden Ameisenfarm haben sich andere Bauformen mehr oder weniger etabliert:

==== Hybride ====
Mischformen der klassischen Ameisenfarm mit neueren Werkstoffen beziehen sich Hauptsächlich auf die rückwärtige Platte. Diese kann zur besseren und gleichmäßigen Befeuchtung aus einem dünnen Ytongstein bestehen oder dünn mit Gips beschichtet werden. Beide Materialien saugen und verteilen sehr gut die Feuchtigkeit im Nest. Die Nachteile liegen auf der Hand: aufwändige Herstellung, und die Farm ist nur von einer Seite einzusehen.

== Befeuchtung ==
Die klassische Ameisenfarm hat auf einer oder auch beiden Seiten ein senkrechtes Röhrchen zum Einfüllen des Wassers. Das obere Ende des Röhrchens sollte so weit aus der Farm ragen, dass einerseits keine Ameisen an dem Röhrchen aus dem Nest gelangen können, andererseits Wasser bequem eingefüllt werden kann. Das untere Ende sollte bis in die Drainageschicht, bzw bis auf den Boden der Farm reichen, es leitet so das Wasser direkt in den unteren Bereich der Ameisenfarm (Drainageschicht), sickerndes Wasser kann so die Gänge und Kammern nicht fluten oder schlimmstenfalls gar zum Einsturz bringen. Das Wasser sammelt sich in der Drainageschicht und zieht langsam in die Nestschicht ein. Das untere Ende des Röhrchens wird mit einem Netz, Gitter oder lockeren Wattestopfen verschlossen. So können grabende Ameisen nicht durch das Röhrchen türmen. Geeignete Röhrchen sind zB Kunststoff-Trinkhalme, Aquarienschlauch, Acrylrohre und so weiter. Kunststoff ist hier immer zu bevorzugen, keinesfalls sollte Metall verwendet werden. Die Röhrchen stehen im unteren Bereich ständig im Wasser, und sind auf ihrer ganzen Länge stetiger Feuchtigkeit ausgesetzt. Ein beschädigtes Röhrchen ist schlecht auszutauschen.<br />
Ein großer Nachteil dieser Methode: das Wasser zieht sich nur durch direkt verbundenes Substrat. Ist zB ein Teil des Nestes durch Gänge und Kammern vom restlichen Substrat abgeschnitten und somit isoliert, wird dieser Teil extrem schlecht und langsam befeuchtet. Als Abhilfe haben sich hier handelsübliche [[Docht]]e als hilfreich erwiesen. Diese Dochte werden zusätzlich zum Röhrchen senkrecht durch den Nestbereich gezogen und enden mit einer kleinen Schlaufe ganz unten in der Drainageschicht. Diese Dochte ziehen durch Kapillarwirkung Wasser aus der Drainageschicht hoch in das Bodensubstrat und überbrücken somit die Gänge und Kammern. Je nach Größe der Ameisenfarm sollten mehrere Dochte zum Einsatz kommen, als Faustregel kann hier 10-15cm feuchter Nestbereich / Docht angenommen werden. Im Zweifelsfalle sollten lieber mehr als zuwenig Dochte eingesetzt werden: überflüssige Dochte können schnell entfernt werden, jedoch ist bei einem fertigen Nest kaum ein Docht nachträglich einzubringen.  
 
== Dekoration ==
Um die Ameisenfarm optisch aufzuwerten, kann die Nestschicht aus verschiedenfarbigen Bereichen gebildet werden. Um verschiedene Nuancen zu erreichen, kann das Sand- Lehm-Verhältnis leicht variiert werden, stärkere Farbunterschiede werden durch roten oder beigen Lehm und verschiedene Sandarten erreicht. Weiterhin geeignet ist feiner Marmor- oder Granitgries als kleine Beimischung. Diese farbigen Substrate können als horizontale oder vertikale Schichten eingebracht werden oder grob vermischt wie ein Marmorkuchen (sehr aufwändig). Im allgemeinen werden horizontale Schichten als sehr dekorativsten angesehen. Durch die hohe Feuchte und ziehendes Wasser ist von Farbzusätzen abzuraten, diese werden schnell schmieren, in die Kammern einsickern und sich auswaschen. Man darf sich nicht wundern, wenn die Ameisen bei ihrer Grabetätigkeit die Schichten mit der Zeit vermengen.

Wie jeder Bereich eines Formicariums sollte auch die Ameisenfarm regelmäßigen Kontrollen unterzogen werden. Augenmerk ist hierbei natürlich auf Schimmel und Parasiten zu legen. Weiterhin ist immer die Feuchte des Nestes zu kontrollieren, eine Ameisenfarm sollte nicht austrocknen... je nach Substrat kann es sonst zum Einstürzen der Bauten kommen. Und wenn wir schon beim Thema Einsturz sind: durch fehlerhaftes Substrat oder starke Erschütterungen kann die Ameisenfarm ganz oder teilweise einbrechen, auch dieses ist zu beachten; bei Bedarf sind die (definitiv) eingeschlossenen Ameisen nach wenigen Stunden vorsichtig auszugraben. In der Regel allerdings schaffen es die Ameisen recht rasch, sich wieder frei zu buddeln.

Trotz aller Gefahren sollte eine Ameisenfarm dann und wann "gegossen" werden ! Ameisen, besonders die Königin, setzen flüssige Köperausscheidungen in die Nestkammern ab, auch sickern Flüssigkeiten der Beutetiere oder anderer feuchter Futtersorten ein. Durch gelegentliches Spülen werden diese Stoffe zumindest zum Teil ausgewaschen und sammeln sich in der Drainageschicht, wo das Schmutzwasser durch zB einen langen Schlauch abgesaugt werden kann. Eine Spülung kann je nach Besatz alle 3-6 Monate durchgeführt werden.<br />
