Prenolepis ist eine mit Ausnahme der nördlichen Holarktis, des tropischen Afrika und Australiens weltweit verbreitete Gattung der Schuppenameisen. In Europa ist nur eine Art vertreten, Prenolepis nitens.

Die meisten früher dieser Gattung zugerechneten Arten mussten inzwischen anderen Gattungen zugeordnet werden, so den Gattungen Nylanderia, Paratrechina, Paraparatrechina, Dorymyrmex, Camponotus, Lasiophanes, Prolasius, Pseudolasius, Iridomyrmex, Lasius, Anoplolepis, Tapinoma bzw. Euprenolepis.
